Suggested Answers to Intermediate Level Guide

 

Shall I make some coffee?

Okay, but we haven't got any/much milk.

Never mind, I like black coffee.

 

I used to smoke, but I've given up now.

When did you stop?

Oh, I haven't had/smoked a cigarette for/in six months.

 

Have you talked to David recently?

Who's David?

He's the man who usually sits over there.

 

As soon as I saw you, I knew we had met before.

 

You say, "Nice to see you." when you see a friend or colleague.

You say, "Nice to meet you." when you are introduced to someone informally.

"She's lonely." means she's unhappy because she wants some company. "She's alone." means no-one is with her.

"Urgent" means something must be done now, not later.

"I'd like to go swimming," means I want to go swimming, now or in the future.  "I  like going swimming." means I often do go, and I generally enjoy it.
